Gold hits record high, now over Tk2.27 lakh per bhori

Gold just hit a crazy new record price in Bangladesh. The cost for a bhori smashed past two hundred twenty-seven thousand taka after another big jump. The Bangladesh Jewellers' Association pricing committee made the call at a Saturday meeting, hiking the rate by over fifteen hundred taka. This follows another record set just days before. Under the new prices, twenty-two carat gold will cost about nineteen thousand five hundred thirty-five taka per gram.

The release from committee chairman Dewan Aminul Islam Shahin listed other rates. Twenty-one carat gold is around eighteen thousand six hundred fifty taka per gram. Eighteen carat is nearly sixteen thousand taka, and traditional gold is about thirteen thousand three hundred twenty-five. Silver prices also went up, with twenty-two carat now at five hundred twenty taka per gram. Buyers still have to pay a five percent government VAT and at least a six percent making charge from the jeweler, which can go higher for fancy designs. The new tariffs start Sunday.
