Google launches Scholar Labs for AI-driven research analysis

Google has introduced Scholar Labs, an experimental artificial intelligence tool designed to assist researchers by decomposing complex academic queries into constituent elements and searching scholarly literature from multiple perspectives. The feature systematically explores Google Scholar's database to identify relevant papers, conceptual relationships, and research angles that address multifaceted questions without requiring users to conduct numerous individual searches.

The limited release targets a select group of authenticated users as the company tests accuracy and reliability for academic applications. Scholar Labs represents Google's effort to maintain its position as the primary academic knowledge gateway while competing against Microsoft Copilot and specialized research platforms that have gained adoption among university communities.

The tool aims to reduce the weeks researchers typically spend reviewing hundreds of publications during literature surveys by automatically synthesizing findings across papers that collectively address broader investigative questions.
