Gov Fintiri's demolition of Jimeta market stalls divides traders

Adamawa State authorities destroyed unauthorized commercial buildings at Jimeta Ultra-Modern Market following Tuesday operations. Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri issued demolition orders through the State Urban and Regional Planning Board on September 12, 2025. Officials stated that merchants constructed illegal temporary structures that obstructed traffic routes and violated the market's approved design. The government targeted only unauthorized constructions while legitimate businesses remained untouched. Affected traders received no financial compensation for their losses.

Market vendors expressed conflicting views about the enforcement action. Abubakar Sa'ad and Salomi Charles criticized authorities for insufficient relocation time during difficult economic conditions. Commerce Commissioner Dr. Ishaya John Dabari justified the removals as essential for restoring proper market organization. Planning Board Chairman T.P. John Zutuwa reported that workers had already cleared more than 2,000 illegal structures. Officials promised continued demolitions until all non-compliant developments disappear from the commercial complex.
