Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says the government wants everyone to live together peacefully because it helps grow the economy. He met with leaders from Narok and Kisii counties after fighting broke out between their communities along the border. Murkomen explained that extra security officers went to the area right away to stop the violence. According to his statement, things have calmed down since then.
Murkomen plans to visit both counties on Friday for peace talks with local leaders and residents. They want to fix the problems between these groups for good. He mentioned they scheduled two meetings that day to begin making peace. He ordered schools and health centers that closed because of safety concerns to open again immediately. He also asked for more security guards to keep everyone safe.
Security teams received orders to arrest anyone carrying weapons or trying to cause trouble between the two communities. Several politicians attended the meeting, including MPs Julius Sunkuli, Silvanus Osoro, Rebecca Tonkei, Alfah Miruka, and Senator Gloria Orwoba. Leaders from both counties also gathered separately at Kiango to address these issues. Kisii Governor Simba Arati met with Narok Governor Patrick ole Ntutu as part of these peace efforts.
Kisii County Commissioner Joseph Kibet reported police arrested someone Monday morning for stealing cattle. They handed this person to criminal investigators for questioning. Kibet said they want to find out who else might be involved across the border. Governor Arati called the fighting between ethnic groups primitive and wasteful. He believes people should focus on education and development instead of stealing livestock.
Arati urged security forces to work harder to prevent more deaths. He pointed out that if Kenyan troops can fight terrorists in Somalia, they should certainly handle these local conflicts. The violence lasted about a week and killed four people - two from each community. Many others suffered arrow wounds and currently receive treatment at hospitals in Kilgoris and Kisii.
