India launched a 1,500 crore rupee program on Saturday to build domestic critical mineral recycling capacity and reduce foreign dependence. The Mines Ministry released guidelines after industry consultations for the Sept. 3 Cabinet-approved initiative that targets e-waste, spent lithium-ion batteries, and scrap materials. Applications open from Oct. 2 through April 1 for new facilities, expansions, and modernization projects focused on mineral extraction rather than intermediate processing.
The National Critical Mineral Mission component caps incentives at 50 crore rupees for large companies and 25 crore rupees for small businesses and startups. Officials project the scheme will generate 270,000 metric tons of annual recycling capacity, produce 40,000 metric tons of critical minerals, attract 8,000 crore rupees in investment, and create 70,000 jobs.
