Governors deny 136 baby deaths at Kiambu hospital

County governors dismissed claims that 136 newborns died at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital on Monday, calling the reports misleading attempts to discredit devolution achievements. Council of Governors Chairman Ahamed Abdullahi stated the headlines about infant deaths were inaccurate witch hunts, while asserting that health services in Kiambu remain operational with doctors staffing all facilities. The governors attributed the allegations to unnamed forces seeking to undermine devolution progress, and emphasized that health remains a devolved function free from external interference.

Abdullahi announced the retention of his chairmanship for a second year by consensus, with Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga continuing as vice chair, and Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki joining as whip. The council reported smooth procurement operations across counties following a court order suspending the National Treasury directive on electronic procurement. Governors challenged critics to demonstrate where the electronic government procurement system functions successfully from start to finish. The executive committee committed to priorities such as operationalizing the Devolution Training Institute, and implementing the Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
