Kenya's government is losing a lot more money in lawsuits. In the last year, it had to pay out 43.8 billion shillings. That's over twice as much as the year before.
The Public Service Commission shared this news. They said the government lost 559 cases involving money, and many different parts of the government were affected.
More and more people are suing the government. The number of lawsuits went up by almost 45% in just one year. There were 6,063 cases filed against public institutions.
The commission thinks this is happening because of bad governance. They said if the government followed the law better, there would be fewer lawsuits.
This is the third year in a row that the government has had to pay more money because of lawsuits. State corporations and agencies had to pay the most, followed by government ministries and departments.
Even public universities and independent offices lost money in lawsuits. At the same time, the government has been winning fewer cases. The money it received from winning lawsuits dropped by 63%.
The commission wants things to change. It said the Attorney General should make a list of all the lawsuits against the government from the last three years. The Attorney General should also figure out why the government keeps losing.
The commission wants a plan to protect taxpayers. Right now, they are the ones paying for the government's court losses.
