Govt's Matopos Genebank is selling bull semen for US$5 a straw

The Matopos Research Institute operates Zimbabwe's premier livestock genetics facility, which began operations last October through climate resilience funding. Green Climate Fund resources supported the establishment via a partnership between the agriculture ministry and United Nations Development Programme. Since opening, the center has attracted 223 farming clients seeking genetic services and materials. The facility specializes in preserving indigenous cattle breeds that demonstrate superior adaptation to challenging environmental conditions. Principal Research Officer Bruce Tavirimirwa oversees operations at this genetics preservation hub.

Staff members have completed 744 semen processing procedures focusing primarily on Tuli and Nkone cattle varieties. The center also processed 640 Simmental samples for commercial distribution across the country. Technical services encompass sperm viability testing, bull soundness evaluations, and frozen genetic material quality assessments. Farmers from Matabeleland region represent the primary client base for these specialized breeding services. The institute maintains public access policies that welcome both smallholder and commercial agricultural operations.

Pricing reflects accessibility goals with indigenous breed samples available at five dollars per unit. Custom processing services cost farmers three dollars and fifty cents per sample from their animals. Bull evaluation procedures require one hundred dollar payments while quality assessments carry ten dollar fees per sample. The center advances national livestock improvement through genetic diversity preservation and climate adaptation strategies. Agricultural extension officers assist farmers seeking access to these reproductive enhancement technologies.
