Gurinder Chadha cooks up Christmas Karma with a Dickens twist

Gurinder Chadha made her Christmas movie, Christmas Karma, because she loves Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life. The filmmaker wanted to create that same warm holiday feeling. She got the idea while walking around Charles Dickens's old place in Clerkenwell, taking inspiration from his stories just like Capra did. She wrote the whole script in two weeks, focusing hard on the music to help tell the story.

Chadha plans a totally traditional holiday with her family. That includes church on Christmas Eve, presents in the morning, and cooking a big meal before watching the King's speech. She celebrates with her cousin's family, which now includes a new baby. Reflecting on her London childhood, she remembers hanging stockings and singing carols. For her, the holiday is about the universal message of kindness and compassion, no matter the religion.
