Guterres demands ceasefire after El Fasher mosque deaths

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded warring factions halt combat immediately after a drone strike killed more than 70 worshippers at Al-Safiya Mosque during Friday morning prayers in el-Fasher. The attack prompted international condemnation as civilians gathered for religious services became targets of the deadly assault. Guterres expressed severe concerns about rapidly worsening conditions across Sudan's Darfur region. Military officials blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for conducting what they termed a horrific crime against peaceful worshippers. The strike represents one of the bloodiest single incidents since RSF forces began their siege of the North Darfur capital over one year ago.

El-Fasher remains the final major government stronghold throughout Darfur as RSF militants continue their sustained offensive against the city. Hundreds of thousands of residents face starvation while trapped without access to essential supplies like food and medicine. The broader Sudanese civil war has displaced millions of people since fighting erupted between government forces and RSF paramilitaries in 2023. International observers describe Sudan's humanitarian crisis as the world's most severe. UNICEF estimates approximately 600,000 people have fled El-Fasher since the siege began.
