The Government of Guyana has forgiven $1.5 billion in student loans during the first half of 2025, according to the Ministry of Finance's mid-year report. This brings the total loan cancellation under the student loan write-off initiative to $2.8 billion since it began in 2024. The program is part of efforts to support higher education, alongside the move to eliminate tuition fees at the University of Guyana.
The report also revealed that the University of Guyana spent $6.5 billion on operations in the same period and received 11,600 student applications. Additionally, the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) program allocated $1.4 billion, awarding 9,741 scholarships, bringing the total since 2021 to 39,499.
