Hallelujah The Hills Go Big With DECK

Ryan Walsh leads the Boston band Hallelujah The Hills but also works as an author. He published a book called Astral Weeks in 2018 about hidden history from that year. Walsh previously wrote articles for Stereogum, including deep research about Silver Jews and their album The Natural Bridge. His band actually traveled on tour with Silver Jews years ago before they stopped performing.

The big news concerns his band launching an enormous music project named DECK. This release includes Cassie Berman singing background vocals on their latest track. She was married to David Berman from Silver Jews until his passing. The band spent over two years recording fifty-two different songs at a Rhode Island studio called Machines With Magnets. They split these tracks across four separate albums labeled Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, and Spades.

Fans helped create this massive collection through financial support on Patreon. Every person who contributed money earned an executive producer credit. The project features many guest musicians, including Patrick Stickles from Titus Andronicus, who appeared on a previous song last year. Other famous contributors include Craig Finn, Sadie Dupuis, Tanya Donelly, Clint Conley, and Ezra Furman.

The music contains surprising elements like Italian string sections plus choir singers from Nigeria. They even added a Scottish bagpiper somewhere in these recordings. Their current single bears the name Fake Flowers At Sunset and showcases Cassie Berman helping with vocals. The album artwork explains the concept perfectly with its simple description of cards. Everything arrives for listeners this June, though nobody explained what those two jokers mentioned on the cover might represent.
