Harare burial costs to soar in 2026 proposal

Harare municipal authorities want to increase cemetery charges by as much as 50 percent starting in January, prompting concern among families who say the higher rates exploit people during times of loss. Adult burials at Warren Hills Cemetery would climb from $275 to $400 under the draft budget awaiting approval, while services for residents of other cities would reach $450. Foreigners would pay $590 to inter relatives, up from $395 at present. Exhumation fees would jump to $525 from $350.

Similar adjustments affect smaller facilities throughout the capital. Granville A Cemetery adult services would rise to $330 from $225, and Mabvuku Cemetery costs would advance to $225 from $150. Memorial installation charges would reach $150 across all municipal burial grounds, an increase of 50 percent over current pricing. Officials opened the proposals for community review through December 1, giving citizens the chance to formally contest the planned adjustments before implementation.
