Harare Council Fury as Retirement Age Hits 70

Harare city council members fight over raising retirement age to 70 years. President Mnangagwa ordered all government workers to stay longer before retirement. Ward 16 Councillor Denford Ngadziore strongly opposes the new rule. He says young graduates wait decades for jobs as older workers stay employed. The council previously raised retirement from 55 to 60 and later to 65 years.

Ngadziore worries about elderly workers doing hard physical jobs. He sees old employees climbing dangerous trucks and equipment. The councillor believes seniors deserve peaceful retirement with pension money. Young people need these jobs to start careers and support families. University graduates cannot find work because positions stay filled.

Human Resources Committee leader George Mujajati supports the government order. The committee already approved the retirement age increase for city workers. Council debates continue as members disagree about following national rules. Local leaders must balance government demands with community needs. The final decision affects thousands of workers and job seekers across Harare.
