Harare Dad Holds on to 85 Child Support

A court in Harare rejected a mom's request for more money from her kids' dad. She asked for US$250 instead of US$85 each month. The judge let the amount stay the same because the dad lost his job.

Chenai Chitunhu told Magistrate Talent Mutasa at Harare Civil Court that prices went up since they set the payment. Her younger daughter started school this year, making it harder to pay all the bills. Chitunhu makes US$60 monthly as a housemaid, which falls short for rent, food, school costs, and basic needs.

Albert Mapurira fought against paying more cash since he became jobless. He said his boss fired him from gardening work after Chitunhu brought police to his workplace. Before losing his job, he earned US$90 per month and already struggled to pay US$85 in child support.

The dad explained that he has zero income right now. Raising the payment would put him in deep trouble, and he would have no way to pay. Magistrate Mutasa heard both sides and agreed with Mapurira. The court decided the monthly payment stays at US$85 despite the mom's request for more help with expenses.
