Harare kombi driver gets 30 months for KO’ing cop at red light

A Harare court sentenced 23-year-old Malvern Last Chiutsi to 30 months in prison after he ran a red light on September 4 at the Leopold Takawira Street and Jason Moyo Avenue intersection. The kombi driver accelerated through traffic in a Nissan NV350, and a police sergeant boarded the vehicle to arrest him. Chiutsi drove to Avondale with the officer inside, struck him in the face, and forced him from the moving vehicle with his conductor's assistance before fleeing.

Authorities later apprehended Chiutsi on three charges. He received 24 months for reckless driving and lost his Class 2 license. The court imposed 12 months for assaulting an officer, with six months suspended for five years, and fined him $100 for disobeying police orders. Medical staff at Parirenyatwa Hospital treated the injured sergeant.
