Harare Residents Decry 100% Increase in Toilet Charges

People in Harare are angry about toilet fees going up from fifty cents to one dollar. The city council made this change without asking anyone first. Women suffer the most because they need bathrooms more often. Civil rights groups say the decision hurts poor families. Long lines form at the few free toilets left downtown.

Women wait for hours just to use basic facilities. Some cannot afford the new price and look for unsafe places instead. The Combined Harare Residents Association speaks out against the unfair policy. They say clean bathrooms should not cost this much money. Pregnant women and mothers with children struggle the most.

Toilet workers are making things worse by demanding extra payments. They lock doors and ask for bribes from desperate people. This breaks the rules since everyone deserves access to clean facilities. The workers take advantage of people who really need help. These actions make a bad situation even harder.

Doctors worry about disease spreading around the city. People might use streets and alleys when they cannot pay for toilets. This creates serious health problems for everyone living there. Dirty conditions lead to sickness spreading fast through neighborhoods. The city risks major health disasters.

Harare officials have not answered the complaints from angry residents. Community groups want the fees lowered back down right away. They ask leaders to talk with women and poor families before making changes. The city needs to care more about people than making money. Residents demand better treatment from their local government.
