Harare tackles bedbugs in overcrowded Mbare

Bedbugs have spread across Mbare, a crowded part of Harare. City officials confirmed the bugs exist there. They planned a big cleanup that starts today. Pest teams will spray chemicals at houses where these tiny bugs live. The spraying begins at Matererini and Matapi Flats first thing this morning. These old apartment blocks house many people in small spaces.

The city says these bugs thrive where many people live close together. Bad trash pickup and dirty areas help bedbugs multiply fast. Stanley Gama from Harare City asked everyone living there to help when spray teams arrived. He wants all doors open early morning. The city plans to teach people about keeping bugs away after they finish spraying. They believe everyone must learn how to prevent future problems.

Gama explained that spraying alone cannot kill all bedbugs. These pests hide deep inside beds, couches, closets, and wall cracks. People need to clean places where spray cannot reach. The city asked for helpers from the neighborhood to join their teams. More hands mean they can cover more houses quickly. They promise to share updates as work moves forward.

Councillor Simbarashe Chanachimwe met with health officials yesterday about this crisis. The Health Ministry agreed to pay for spraying every home in Mbare. Many families cannot sleep because of these bugs, and some people show bite marks all over their skin. The problem first appeared in 2020. Desperate families burned furniture and blankets trying to stop these pests.

All groups agreed to spray every building in Mbare - homes, flats, and shops. Chanachimwe begged residents to let spray teams enter their homes today. He stressed that missing even one house could ruin everything. Many locals blame used clothing bales for bringing bedbugs into the area. These second-hand clothes sit inside many Mbare homes. Others point to old furniture and piles of garbage as perfect breeding spots for these stubborn insects.
