The Game Awards dropped a surprise trailer for Highguard, a PvP raid shooter from Wildlight Entertainment, which was founded by former Respawn devs who worked on Titanfall and Apex Legends. The game lets players fight on horseback while battling rival crews for control of territory, and it hits PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 as a free-to-play title next January.
Players take on the role of Wardens who compete to grab something called the Shieldbreaker, then raid enemy bases to claim land. The whole thing looks pretty ambitious with a ton of different abilities and mechanics happening at once, but the horseback combat is what seems to be grabbing attention.
Nobody really saw this announcement coming since leaks usually spoil everything ahead of time. Whether it becomes the next breakout indie shooter remains unclear, but the team behind it definitely has the credentials to pull something interesting off.
