Hochul backs Mamdani for NYC mayor as Netanyahu arrest vow splits Democrats

Governor Kathy Hochul announced her support for Zohran Mamdani ahead of November's mayoral contest. The Democratic leader made this decision after private discussions with the 33-year-old progressive candidate. Mamdani secured 56.4 percent of primary votes against former Governor Andrew Cuomo. His platform centers on affordable housing initiatives and free public transportation. The activist has pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu based on International Criminal Court charges.

Cuomo continues his campaign despite the primary defeat. Recent polling data shows Mamdani maintains a substantial advantage over his Republican opponent. Several high-profile Democratic officials have withheld their endorsements from the progressive candidate. Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen criticized party colleagues for their reluctance to support Mamdani. The general election takes place on November 4th, with voters deciding between the progressive Democrat and his Republican challenger.
