NYC Mayor Eric Adams quits reelection race weeks before the vote

New York City Mayor Eric Adams ended his reelection campaign Sunday after media scrutiny and financing obstacles derailed his candidacy five weeks before the November vote. Adams cited constant speculation about his political future and the city campaign finance board's refusal to provide public matching funds as reasons for suspending his independent bid. The former police officer faced bribery and fraud charges that federal prosecutors dropped in April at Trump administration direction though controversy damaged his standing with voters. Democrat Zohran Mamdani leads the race against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa while Adams serves his remaining term through January without endorsing any successor.
