Holiday Inn Mutare duo walk free

Two accountants at Holiday Inn Mutare have walked free after prosecutors admitted the hotel's weak financial controls, not criminal wrongdoing, caused a loss approaching $600,000. Munetsi Makoni and Takura Ngatiyane were cleared by the Mutare Regional Court when evidence showed a third colleague, Gift Sauramba, handled all banking operations alone before fleeing Zimbabwe.

The state abandoned its conspiracy case against the pair, conceding the establishment's lax oversight created openings for theft by anyone in the flawed system. Testimony from bank representatives and hotel workers confirmed that only Sauramba processed deposits during the period spanning early 2022 through mid-2023.

Defense lawyers argued the trial exposed glaring vulnerabilities in the complainant's financial procedures rather than proving guilt. The magistrate accepted the prosecution's withdrawal, noting systemic failures made it impossible to attribute blame to the discharged defendants.
