The Kenyan judiciary is mourning the loss of a respected judge. Hon. John Tito Kunyuk passed away after a long illness. He was the Principal Kadhi at the Nakuru Law Courts.
Chief Justice Martha Koome shared the sad news and expressed her deep sorrow in a message of condolence. Koome described Kunyuk as a dedicated judicial officer whose career was marked by a strong commitment to justice, scholarship, and serving his community.
"I wish to extend my deepest condolences to Kunyuk's family, relatives, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time," Koome said.
Kunyuk started working for the Judiciary in January 2013. He was appointed a Resident Kadhi and posted to the Kajiado Law Courts. Over the years, he served with unwavering dedication at various stations, including the Isiolo, Kakuma, Kisumu, and Nakuru Law Courts.
Kunyuk was known for his strong principles of justice. He was also widely recognized as an avid reader and researcher, and he had a passion for scholarly pursuits.
Kunyuk's academic work and publications focused on important topics. These included Islamic Family Law and its application in modern Kenyan society. He also studied the history and practices of the Kadhis' Court in Kenya. Additionally, Kunyuk researched the history and literature of his Turkana community.
Kunyuk was dedicated to helping his community. He championed various community and charity programs in his home county of Turkana.
"Throughout his career, Kunyuk exemplified the virtues of hard work, fairness, and professionalism in all his judicial duties," Koome stated.
She added that Kunyuk's passing is a deep loss. It affects not only his family but also the Judiciary and the communities he faithfully served.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as we mourn the loss of a dedicated judicial officer," Koome said. "His legacy of service will continue to inspire us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon".
