Samuel Omwenga met President William Ruto during the 2007 Pentagon campaigns. Omwenga and Senator Ledama Olekina had lunch at the Fairfax Hotel, where they sat near Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi, Charity Ngilu, and Najib Balala.
Omwenga and Olekina greeted the group. Everyone chatted except Ruto, who only shook hands. Omwenga believed Ruto would not wait long to become president due to his age.
Before the 2013 elections, Omwenga urged Raila Odinga to bring Ruto back to ODM. He predicted Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta would be acquitted of ICC charges.
Omwenga believes Raila regrets letting Ruto go in 2013. Ruto preferred working with Uhuru. The 2018 handshake between Uhuru and Raila led to a falling out between Uhuru and Ruto.
In the 2022 elections, Raila had Uhuru's support. He wanted to prevent Ruto from succeeding Uhuru and gain personal revenge for Ruto abandoning him in 2013.
