Chinese authorities have guided 580 hikers to safety in Tibet after severe weather stranded them near Mount Everest, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The hikers, along with 300 guides, yak handlers, and support staff, reached the township of Qudang and the surrounding areas after heavy snowfall blocked their route at an elevation of over 4,900 meters. A final group of about 10 hikers, escorted by rescue workers, has reached a safe point equipped with heating, oxygen, and emergency supplies.
The blizzard, which began on Friday, disrupted China’s Golden Week tourism season, leaving many hikers facing hypothermia. Police, firefighters, and volunteers took part in the rescue. In Qinghai province, one hiker died from hypothermia and altitude sickness, while 137 others were evacuated.
