Jamaica has confirmed 45 deaths from Hurricane Melissa, with St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland recording the highest fatalities at 18 and 15, respectively, Education Minister Dana Dixon announced Tuesday. Other parishes reported smaller losses, including six in St. James, two each in Hanover and Trelawny, and one apiece in St. Ann and Portland. Authorities have completed 33 post-mortem examinations while additional cases await processing.
Relief efforts have generated substantial support, with 170 registered donors and 40 countries contributing aid through bilateral channels. The Support Jamaica platform has collected 1.08 million dollars in donations, supplemented by 53.2 million Jamaican dollars via credit card transactions. Some 526 schools have resumed operations across the island.
