A civic organization has called on Zimbabweans across all sectors to oppose the ruling party's proposal to extend the president's term past 2028. Mbuso Fuzwayo, who leads Ibhetshu LikaZulu as secretary general, stated that citizens must protect the 2013 Constitution from partisan changes that serve elite interests rather than public welfare.
The constitution emerged from broad national participation and should not be altered through parliamentary votes that bypass popular input, Fuzwayo argued. He warned that prolonging Mnangagwa's presidency would increase corruption, deepen poverty, restrict freedoms and weaken democratic structures while benefiting only those currently holding power.
The pressure group urged workers, students, religious communities, civil society groups, traditional authorities and expatriates to employ all lawful methods of resistance. Fuzwayo described the term extension effort as an attack on democratic principles that dishonors those who struggled to establish accountable governance.
