In Feni, Mintoo says Khaleda Zia to contest 13th parliamentary poll

Bangladesh Nationalist Party Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo announced on Wednesday that party leader Khaleda Zia maintains excellent health and will contest the forthcoming 13th general election. Mintoo made these remarks to journalists following a consultation session in Feni district. The BNP official predicted that voting would occur during February's opening week, though January remains possible given current national circumstances. A Supreme Court proceeding examines the caretaker government system, which could require elections within three months if restored. Mintoo referenced coordination with acting chairman Tarique Rahman during London discussions that produced a collaborative interim government declaration.

The party maintains confidence in this arrangement while acknowledging that legal and political developments might accelerate the timeline. Mintoo emphasized that accountable governance requires public responsibility, noting two decades of opposition struggle against authoritarian rule. He rejected suggestions that the BNP suddenly demands elections, asserting continuous calls since 2006. The 2008 contest lacked freedom and fairness, according to party assessment. Mintoo argued that extended periods without elected, responsive leadership prevent economic progress and improved living conditions for citizens.
