Khaleda Zia died during treatment at Evercare Hospital

The iron lady of Bangladesh politics is gone. BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia died during treatment at Evercare Hospital, confirmed party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The eighty-year-old leader, a three-time premier and the nation's first woman to hold that office, had long suffered from severe complications affecting her heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys, ultimately succumbing to infections and pneumonia.

Her political legacy began after her husband, military leader Ziaur Rahman, was assassinated, pushing the previously apolitical Khaleda into leading the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. She earned a reputation as an uncompromising figure during the movement against autocrat Hussain Muhammad Ershad. After winning the 1991 election, she established the parliamentary system and a caretaker government model for elections. She spent years in prison from 2018 until her death, with her family's requests for overseas medical care being denied. She is survived by her son, Tarique Rahman, who recently returned from exile, and was preceded in death by her younger son, Arafat Rahman Koko.
