India boxers sweep Day 1 at World Cup finals

India secured four medals at the World Boxing Cup Finals 2025 after Minakshi, Preeti, Ankush Phangal and Narender Berwal each advanced to the semifinals with decisive victories at Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex. World Championships gold medalist Minakshi defeated Kazakhstan's Bolat Akbota in the 48kg division while Preeti overwhelmed Uzbekistan's Nigina Uktamova at 54kg. Ankush Phangal controlled his bout against Japan's Go Wakaya in the 80kg category, and Narender Berwal earned a 4:1 decision over Ukraine's Andrii Khaletskyi despite sustaining a cut above his eye during the 90+kg contest.

The tournament features only the top eight competitors worldwide in each weight class. Upcoming Indian boxers include Pawan Bartwal, facing Kazakhstan's Altynbek Nursultan at 55kg, Sumit meeting Korea's Kim Hyeon-tae at 75kg, and Naveen Kumar challenging Kazakhstan's Tangatar Bekzat at 90kg. Jadumani Singh will compete against Kazakhstan's Ongarov Nurzat at 50kg, while Hitesh prepares to face Asian Games medalist Sewon Okazawa at 70kg.
