India to host FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 from October 30 to November 27

FIDE selected India as the venue for the 2025 Chess World Cup tournament. The competition will take place between October 30 and November 27. Officials plan to announce the specific host city at a later date. The top three competitors will secure automatic entry into the 2026 Candidates Tournament. This tournament determines who challenges for the World Chess Championship.

The event will feature 206 participants competing through single elimination rounds. Each match consists of two classical games over two days with potential tiebreakers on the third day. The format eliminates losers immediately from further competition. Top-ranked players receive first-round byes while lower-seeded competitors face early matches. India previously organized major chess competitions such as the 2022 Chess Olympiad and 2024 World Junior Championships.

FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky praised Indian chess supporters for their passionate engagement with the sport. The organization expects significant local and online interest from chess enthusiasts throughout the country.
