Indonesia bets $1B on BRICS bank, ditches dollar drama

Indonesia is putting a billion dollars into the BRICS development bank. The country's economic minister, Airlangga Hartarto, confirmed the funding pledge. Indonesia joined the bloc earlier this year, partly seeking other markets amid tense trade relations. The contribution to the New Development Bank aims to finance sustainable projects across member nations. This move fits the country's strategy to balance its global economic ties. It also supports broader efforts to reduce reliance on the US dollar in international trade.

The bank itself has about one hundred billion in authorized capital. Founding members hold most of its shares. It has funded many infrastructure and energy projects so far. The bank's president, Dilma Rousseff, praised Indonesia's progress in biofuels during a visit. While the dollarization is a goal for some members, success has been mixed. Some bilateral trade now uses local currencies, but the dollar still dominates global finance. Recent political threats have even caused some bloc members to slow plans for a shared currency. For Indonesia, the investment helps fund dozens of its own national projects and strengthens its role in alternative financial institutions.
