A 38-year-old male inmate escaped from the Sri Aman Central Prison by climbing a temporary gate within the compound. The prisoner, identified as John Sambang Sangau, was reportedly wearing only green trousers during his escape. He had been serving a sentence for a drug offence and was scheduled for release in January.
Police Superintendent Dennis Bunyam reported that the escape was discovered by officers on duty, who immediately initiated a search. A formal police report was subsequently lodged by the prison authorities.
In response, police have launched a tracking operation, establishing roadblocks and mobilizing personnel across the district. They have also requested assistance from the police K9 unit and the General Operations Force to help locate the suspect.
