Inmates Grab Telio Phones for Outside Chats

Prisoners at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay jails can make phone calls to family members. The Telio one-way phone system started Friday at both places. People locked up can talk to the outside world more often. The government spends less money on telephone costs with this new system. Commissioner general Raphael Hamunyela runs the prison service and likes the program.

Windhoek jail has used Telio phones since 2019 with good results. Prisoners behave better when they can call home regularly. Officials record all phone conversations to prevent problems. Guards listen to calls to make sure nobody breaks rules. The program helps inmates stay connected to their families during prison time.

Hamunyela wants to bring Telio phones to prisons across the country. He told prisoners to use the phones the right way. The system helps people change their lives for the better. Anyone who misuses the phones faces punishment. Prison leaders will stop phone access for people who break the rules.
