Insane Unreal Engine 6 Multicore Revolution Ramps Up

Epic Games president Tim Sweeney discussed Unreal Engine 6 during a Lex Friedman podcast interview. He said UE6 will combine the current separate development paths for game creators and Fortnite users. Early test versions might reach developers in two to three years.

Sweeney admitted their tech faces limits because they use single-core processing for simulations. This choice makes programming easier for everyone, but wastes most of the power in modern computers. The company plans to fix this core limitation with the next engine version.

These processing issues have caused problems in many games using Unreal Engine 4 and 5. Players will need patience as the first UE6 games likely will not appear until around 2028 or 2029. Previous engine upgrades took several years between early versions and finished games reaching stores.
