UN Judge Sent Down for Forcing Maid Into Slavery

Courts jailed a UN judge for keeping a woman as her slave. Police found Lydia Mugambe had made a young Ugandan work for free as her maid. The Oxford student received six years and four months for modern slavery crimes. She showed no remorse during her trial last week.

Mugambe lied about the visa papers to bring the woman to England. The fake papers claimed the woman would earn money with a Ugandan diplomat in London. She instead forced the woman to live as her servant. The victim stayed afraid because Mugambe held power in Uganda. She can never return home or see her family again.

Police wanted to arrest the helper diplomat, but Uganda kept him safe. Mugambe claimed she treated the woman well. Oxford started removing her after her crimes came to light. Police hope other slavery victims might speak up soon. The court said Mugambe used her status against someone who knew nothing about UK job rights.
