Intel digs into Arc GPU lag on old CPUs

Intel finally started investigating performance problems with Arc GPUs paired with older processors. The company admitted it knows about reduced gaming performance when using its Battlemage graphics cards with previous-generation CPUs. It plans to fix these issues through driver updates, but hasn't given a specific timeline.

Hardware Unboxed first discovered that Arc B580 cards perform poorly with older Ryzen 2000 and 9th-gen Intel Core processors. Intel waited quite a while before acknowledging this problem on its forums. The company says it will test more hardware combinations to improve compatibility across different systems. These optimization problems might explain why the Arc B580 and B570 GPUs never became popular despite offering more video memory than competitors.

The good news is that these performance issues only affect older processors. When paired with current-generation CPUs from Intel and AMD, the Arc graphics cards perform as expected. Unfortunately, these fixes may come too late, as Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs remain hard to find in stores. Limited availability has already pushed these budget graphics cards out of the market competition against AMD and NVIDIA options.
