Intel's Nova Lake Socket Switch Has Builders Fuming

Intel will change the socket design for Nova Lake processors. The company moves from LGA 1851 to LGA 1954 for these new chips. Computer builders must buy different motherboards to use Nova Lake processors. People who upgrade from older systems face the same requirement. The socket switch follows Intel's normal pattern of changes every few generations.

Users can keep their current cooling systems with Nova Lake processors. The LGA 1954 socket measures 45 x 37.5 millimeters across. This matches the exact dimensions of LGA 1851 and LGA 1700 sockets. Shipping documents confirm these measurements for the first time. Most existing coolers will attach properly to the new socket design.

Nova Lake processors will pack more cores than any mainstream Intel chip. The top model contains 52 cores total across different core types. This doubles the core count compared to current Arrow Lake processors. Intel will use both 14A manufacturing and TSMC 2nm technology. The company expects to launch Nova Lake processors next year.
