The International Organization for Migration stopped helping thousands of displaced people travel within South Sudan because they ran out of money. The group needs 6.5 million dollars right away to restart transport services for refugees and returnees fleeing violence from neighboring Sudan. People cross dangerous borders and need safe rides to reach family members or find shelter inside South Sudan.
The organization cut back transport help starting June 1st after funds dried up. Only one bus and one truck leave daily from the Joda border crossing to Renk, which cannot handle the huge number of people arriving. The group used boats, buses and planes to move people before the money problems started.
Nearly 1.2 million people entered South Sudan since fighting began in Sudan during April 2023. About one-third are Sudanese refugees and two-thirds are South Sudanese citizens returning home. Many arrivals feel exhausted, hungry and sick after their long journeys to safety.
Border areas like Renk overflow with people who cannot afford to travel further into the country. The organization expects 125,000 more arrivals before this year ends. Around 43,000 people urgently need transport assistance to reach their final destinations and reconnect with loved ones.
