Iran eyes Silk Road entry, expands Pakistan rail and sea links

Pakistani and Iranian officials strengthened diplomatic relationships during recent discussions in Islamabad. Iranian Roads Minister Farzaneh Sadegh participated in meetings with three Pakistani cabinet members during her presidential delegation visit. Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, and Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi represented Pakistan's interests. The ministers addressed transportation improvements, trade expansion, and regional connectivity projects. Both nations explored joining China's Silk Road initiative and developing the Gwadar-Chabahar maritime corridor.

Khan praised Iran's position against Israeli actions and invited Sadegh to Pakistan's October ministerial conference featuring twenty countries. Sadegh appreciated Pakistan's support and emphasized upgrading the Quetta-Zahedan route while increasing commercial vehicle traffic between borders. Pakistani officials proposed bilateral working groups to accelerate implementation of agreed proposals. Railway connections between Islamabad, Tehran, and Istanbul received attention alongside Quetta-Zahedan line improvements. Sadegh described her visit as pleasant and expressed optimism for future cooperation between the neighboring nations.
