Jamaica secures $93M in climate recovery funds

Jamaica scored roughly 93 million bucks in climate funding commitments after sending its crew to COP30 in Brazil, and Climate Minister Matthew Samuda told Parliament the money will help rebuild stuff wrecked by Hurricane Melissa. The country locked down 20 million from the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, which launches later this month, and they are throwing proposals at water and agriculture projects that will probably run through the Jamaica Social Investment Fund.

Samuda said the Clean Technology Fund is offering 50 million at cheap rates for solar gear and micro-grids to power water systems, plus another 20 million in grants through a resilience program. Small farmers and fisheries are getting 3 million right away from the Global Environment Facility, and officials are chasing 6 million more before the board meets. Jamaica is setting up a new Climate Finance Committee to wrangle all the cash, pulling people from finance ministries and development banks.
