Joao Neves evades Super Cup ban, will face Tottenham in Udine

Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves will participate in Paris Saint-Germain's European Super Cup clash against Tottenham despite his dismissal from the Club World Cup final. Le Parisien reports that FIFA regulations prevent his red card from affecting the upcoming match. The player received his marching orders during PSG's encounter with Chelsea on July 13 in the tournament's championship game. UEFA has sent no official communication to Paris Saint-Germain regarding any potential ban for the Super Cup fixture. The competition takes place August 13 at Udine's Friuli Stadium in Italy.

FIFA's tournament guidelines specify that disciplinary actions from Club World Cup matches remain separate from other competitions. Article 9.6 of the regulations published in October 2024 establishes this principle clearly. The governing body would need to launch a dedicated investigation against Neves for any suspension to apply across tournaments. Such proceedings have not commenced against the Portuguese international. Coach Luis Enrique retains full access to his midfielder for the season's opening official fixture.
