José Mourinho close to a deal with Portugal's Benfica

Portuguese giants Benfica have initiated talks with José Mourinho about becoming their new manager. The club dismissed Bruno Lage after a shocking three goals to two defeat against Azerbaijani side Qarabag in the Champions League group stage opener. Supporters expressed outrage following the unexpected result. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that discussions between Benfica officials and Mourinho have progressed significantly. The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss appears receptive to an immediate return to management.

Mourinho recently lost his position at Turkish club Fenerbahçe after they were eliminated by Benfica during Champions League qualification. The Portuguese tactician previously achieved success in his homeland when he guided Porto to European Cup glory in 2004. Romano confirmed through social media that both parties remain optimistic about reaching an agreement. Benfica supporters anticipate the potential appointment of one of football's most decorated coaches. The club seeks to restore stability following their disappointing European campaign start.
