KACITA chairman arrested over incitement, assault charges

Uganda police detained Issa Sekito, interim head of the Kampala City Traders Association, on Wednesday after unrest in the downtown area. Authorities accused Sekito of encouraging violence and attacking officers. Kampala police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Sekito was held at Kampala Central Police Station for questioning. Thirteen additional suspects faced arrest on similar allegations. Case files were moved to prosecutors for review.

Tensions escalated recently between traders and officials over market shutdowns and regulation enforcement. Police warned against demonstrations that endanger public safety while increasing patrols near Nakivubo Road and other commercial zones. Owoyesigyire urged citizens to avoid unlawful actions that threaten businesses operating normally. The incident strains relations as KACITA navigates internal leadership challenges amid disputes over taxes and trade policies. Shops remained open under police supervision throughout the city center on Thursday.
