Tinotenda Kadewere impressed coach Michael Nees during his first game back from injury against Burkina Faso last Friday. The Nantes striker played the full 90 minutes despite Nees planning to use him for only 60 minutes of the match. Kadewere showed excellent fitness and skill even though the Warriors lost 2-0 to their West African opponents. The coach praised the forward for displaying quality when he reached top physical condition. Injuries had kept Kadewere away from national team duties for extended periods before this return.
Four players earned their first Warriors caps during the friendly match against strong opposition from Burkina Faso. Bill Antonio and Mason Mushore started the game while Tawanda Macheke and Sean Fusire came on as second half substitutes. Khama Billiat suffered repeated fouls during the match and had to leave early for his protection. The team conceded two goals during the first half because of poor concentration and passing mistakes. Coach Nees wants better focus from the opening whistle when they face Niger on Tuesday.
Zimbabwe also crashed out of the COSAFA Cup after losing 2-0 to South Africa at Toyota Stadium yesterday. Kabelo Dhlamini scored a first half penalty and Ime Okoni added a header during the 78th minute. The Warriors failed to register any shots on target and remain without a goal during the tournament. Goalkeeper Martin Mapisa made four crucial saves to keep the score respectable against the hosts. Zimbabwe needed a victory to advance but cannot reach the semifinals even with a win over Mozambique.
