Kamuli police kill fake dollar gang boss Sowedi Egumbye in Buzaaya

Police fatally shot Sowedi Egumbye during a violent confrontation in Kamuli District on Wednesday night. Egumbye served as husband to parliamentary candidate Sarah Auma and allegedly led a counterfeit currency operation based in Nawanyago. The incident occurred when armed suspects attacked incumbent legislator Martin Muzaale's residence around 11 pm. Officers responded to emergency calls and fired at fleeing vehicles after the group rammed through the politician's gate. Egumbye died from gunshot wounds at Kamuli General Hospital.

Authorities recovered weapons and arrested multiple suspects who appeared to be non-local residents. Police believe the attackers were transported to disrupt the National Resistance Movement's primary elections through violence. The operation violated campaign regulations by occurring outside official hours. Egumbye had faced a previous arrest in 2024 for operating fake dollar schemes across the Busoga region. His death highlights growing concerns about criminal elements infiltrating Uganda's political processes during the ongoing party primaries.
