KDF Remembers Crew a Year After Chopper Crash

Kenya military leaders gathered at Moi Air Base yesterday for a memorial honoring ten officers killed in a helicopter crash last year. The April 2024 tragedy claimed the life of Gen Francis Ogolla, former Chief of Defence Forces, along with nine other service members. Family members attended the solemn ceremony marking one year since the accident happened in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Charles Magondu, father of the victim Maj George Magondu, thanked military officials for supporting grieving families. Crash survivor Col Kasaine Ole Kuruta shared his recovery journey at the event. He expressed gratitude toward medical teams who helped him heal both physically and emotionally after surviving the devastating incident that claimed his colleagues.

Current Defence Forces Chief Gen Charles Kahariri asked attendees to remember the legacy of those lost. He praised families for their strength during the difficult year following the accident. Military investigators determined engine failure caused the Bell Huey helicopter crash when it attempted takeoff on April 18 last year.

The report confirmed that qualified pilots tried landing safely after complete power loss but lost control. Witnesses heard a loud bang from the engine before the aircraft yawed left and lost power. Investigators found evidence of an engine compressor stall, with temperature readings showing dangerous overheating.
