Kenya Atwoli Exit Tease Sends Unions Into Overdrive

Francis Atwoli talked about leaving his job during Labor Day events Thursday at Nairobi's Uhuru Gardens. The 75-year-old COTU leader noted that his 24 years heading the group span four presidents. He has worked under Moi, Kibaki, Kenyatta, and Ruto since 2001.

Atwoli told President Ruto he might become his final president before stepping down. But COTU board members gave Atwoli their support on April 29 for another term. He promised to respect their democratic choice about his future with the labor group.

Kenya Aviation Workers Union head Moss Ndiema said workers still want Atwoli because of his deep experience. The board welcomes the coming elections, Atwoli announced last month. They have already backed him as their only candidate despite some calls for fresh leadership.
