Kenya DPP Ingonga begs neighbors to help fight crime gangs

Kenya's Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga addressed regional officials at a Nairobi conference on Monday about combating transnational organized crime. The Global Organized Crime Index ranked Kenya sixteenth worldwide for criminality in 2023. Ingonga emphasized that individual nations cannot effectively address human trafficking, narcotics smuggling, cybercrime, and money laundering without regional partnerships. Criminal networks exploit gaps between national legal systems and institutions. The Regional Conference on Strengthening Cross-Border Coordination brought together officials from multiple countries.

The East Africa Transnational Organized Crime Project has trained over 270 law enforcement officers through standardized guidelines and curricula. This initiative created networks connecting prosecutors, police, and judicial personnel across borders. Ingonga outlined three strategic areas for future development. Harmonizing the legal framework with international conventions represents the top priority. Enhanced institutional capacity through training programs and expanded intelligence sharing constitute the remaining focal points.

Kenya pledges continued support for specialized prosecution units and digital case management systems. Electronic evidence handling and data analytics will improve transparency and efficiency. Strategic partnerships with international agencies strengthen the country's anti-crime capabilities.
