Kenya Kwanza faces a dilemma over calls to arrest Gachagua after protests

Kenya Kwanza leaders face a tough choice about arresting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The impeached politician claims President William Ruto wants him behind bars to stop him from moving around the country. Pro-government voices demand his arrest over claims he paid for the June 25 Gen Z protests. Gachagua laughs off these accusations and says the young people needed no money or help from anyone. He dares police to come for him and promises to keep fighting from prison.

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin says nobody summoned Gachagua about the protests. However, Amin warns that the former deputy president can still face charges like any other citizen. Police will act if they find proof he helped with criminal activities during the demonstrations. Gachagua also faces possible hate speech and incitement charges that could land him in more trouble. The bold politician tells crowds he will run things from Kamiti Maximum Prison if they lock him up.

Political experts think arresting Gachagua would backfire badly for the government. Lawyer Suyinka Lempaa believes such a move would make Gachagua look like a hero and victim. Courts can only hold suspects for 24 hours before requiring strong evidence against them. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka threatens nationwide protests if authorities arrest the former deputy president. Two Gachagua allies already landed in Ruiru police station on Tuesday.
